Private Swim Coaches Training

How does a Visual Impaired person learn swimming?

In SwimRay, we believe in the importance of contributing and giving back to our community. SwimRay has provided swimming lessons monthly for the past year to the Singapore’s Association of the Visually Handicapped, a voluntary welfare organisation for the visually impaired. A common misconception that people have is that it is not necessary and rather dangerous for the visually impaired to pick up swimming, but we believe that with the right lesson plan and support, anyone is able to pick up swimming.

Since it is not possible for the coaches to demonstrate, we will be using mostly verbal cues to guide learners during lessons. We will go through the importance of Water Safety, letting them know areas of hazard and places to stay away from. While giving them cues and instructions, coaches will also remind swimmers of the places where they can take a break, such as the pool divider and the side of the pool.

Coaches must to be empathetic and often needs to repeat their instructions and drills during classes as the process of building up individual's water confidence requires time. After a swimmer is able to stay relax and focus in the water, we will then move onto breaststroke and freestyle. For learners who like swimming, we will also help them excel in the sport through deeper analysis for their strokes and techniques. This will open up a new world of exercise for them as they are able to enjoy the water and other water sports.
